May 8, 1901

Initially known as the Americans or Pilgrims, they beat the Philadelphia 12-4 before 11,500 fans in their home game at the newly-built Huntington Avenue Grounds at today’s 400 Huntington Avenue. Previously the Buffalo team in the Western league, the franchise was transferred to Boston on January 28, 1901. Jimmy Collins is the first manager. The team is purchased by John Taylor on April 18, 1904 and is renamed the Red Sox in 1907. The team moves to a new stadium in the Back Bay Fens in 1912.*
